Trying to find a Middle School for our Daughter
October 22nd, 2008This year we couldn’t get our daughter into a local school we felt comfortable with. The two good schools in our district are not our neighborhood school so we had to try and get in via lottery. We lost. Our neighborhood school sucks. There are reports of poor teacher attitude, unruly students and even violence. This is a middle school. So, since moving isn’t an option and private school isn’t an option, we are left with homeschooling as our best choice.
We then found a great Charter School for her. They teach using a philosophy of Project Based Learning. This is a powerful model for teaching children that I have come to believe in very strongly since looking into it more closely. I will blog on it more later. The school is for grades 6 - 12 and the charter of the school is College Prep. So the goal is that students graduating from the school should be able to attend the college of their choice. An excellent charter.
Unfortunately, because of the politics of charter schools (basically that school districts hate charter schools and do whatever they can to prevent charters from being granted), this school won’t open until the 2009 school year. So, it’s homeschooling for us this year. It’s been going great. Chloe and I love it and she is learning amazing things at an accelerated rate. I’ll blog more about this too.
